Laser Grips Questions

Kind of off topic at first here, but the wife asked for a shoulder holster yesterday and we got her one for her light 38 snubby. It is small enough it does not show if she wears a shell (fancy t-shirt) then the holster, then a women's business jacket, or a light winter jacket, or even one of my dark heavier shirts over it.

I was kind of thunderstruck. She rarely wears a belt, so I'm not really sure that is the best holster for her. I think a purse with built in holster would be better, or as light as her titanium 38 is even a clip on holster clipped on the inside of her waist band. But I was not about to discourage her in any way about packing. I feel a lot safer with her able to defend herself if we are not together.

So we had fun getting her shoulder holster. It is a bit tight right now and she is a little slow getting the gun free, so I put a slightly bigger gun in to stretch it just a bit. I don't want it flopping out either, but it was too tight. I'll work with it some to loosen it up.

But I felt proud of her. She was scared of guns when we met.

Anyway, I want to get her laser grips, but they don't have them for the titanium. I ordered some that said they fit the titanium, but they didn't and I had to return them.

I may try a S&W stainless because I think I can get laser grips for the round butt model. She shoots fine at the range, but in an emergency I think that red dot on the target would up her odds.

Has anyone tried laser grips on handguns? The kind you attach to the barrel look to me like they'd get knocked out of alignment, but the ones built into the grip look great. I'm thinking of putting them on my 45 auto too.

And I also wondered if a gunsmith could alter ones made for one gun for another. She loves her light titanium 38.

I used to shoot a handgun ok, though I was much better with a rifle or shotgun, but in a stressed situation, and if I needed to shoot fast, I think that laser would help me too. We do not go to the range near enough.

If its the s-w 38 scandium-titanium the grips should fit. Mine do.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

what are laser grips? AfP, I also have a titanium (357) snub but was wondering about a shoulder holster. I also dont wear a belt. unfortunately big brother state doesnt want its citizens t o own guns (still legal for now), carry them or use them. so the holster would just be a fashion accessory for now.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

I like the idea of a shoulder holster. If a lady's pistol is in her purse, it's not much use to her if someone snatches the purse.

As for the laser grips, Crimson Trace is the big name, Gal. My mom has a set of CTs on a Baretta. I shoot a lot better with the sights. I won't rule out the possibility that the laser would be faster/better in a high stress situation, though.

For me, I'd rather use the 3 or 4 hundred bucks for the laser grips on ammo and training.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

Her titanium 38 is the taurus. At the time we got it I did not know anyone else was making titanium 38s. Or titanium any guns actually. It was the first titanium gun I had seen.

But I'd be willing to get the S&W just to get her the grips.

Gal, they now make handgun grips that when you squeeze your gun's grip, shine a laser dot where the gun will hit if you fire. Very helpful if you are as stressed as she would be in a shooting situation, besides which there is always a chance that having a red dot on their chest might make an attacker turn tail and run. Which would save a whole lot of legal hassle.

noob, how do you like the laser grips? Accurate? Easy activation?

Good point. Well, she likes the shoulder holster anyway so I'm not going to be anything but positive about it.

Do you think it is not being used to the laser or do you think it is not all that accurate in where it lights?

With long guns my firing style goes back to BB guns and because of that I do better with open sights than a scope to this day. Like a baseball swing or something it has just become natural. I would pretty much have to learn to shoot over to get good with a scope. I shot a lot as a kid.

That cracked me up, gal.

thanks guys. laser grip sounds like a good idea for stress situation, I'm an excellent shot but that is in a non stress sit. I also have a Taurus so AfP you are saying the laser grip you bought did not work? what brand grip did you buy? wonder if Taurus sells laser grips for their guns?

Re: Laser Grips Questions

I went to the S&W site and they have a model now that comes with the crimson trace grips from the factory. It isn't titanium, but it would be light too, being one of the airweight series J frame alloy and stainless models. It weighs 15 ounces empty, so 1 pound loaded, or so. That is plenty light enough.

MSRP $798, but considering that the grips are on it, that is not a bad deal.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

I just picked up my J frame for $425 OTD with no laser sight. I'm thinking $550 give or take would be about right with the laser.

Let me chime in ...
Have shot rifle and pistol in competition for years,
have a few thoughts..
1.for night shooting good thing.
1.a because of the light can make you a better target bad thing. Can see where the light is coming from. and that will make you a better target. Do not believe what you see in the movies.
2.At night,,you can use the laser to blind ,good thing.
3. Day time next to useless.
4. For fear factor, seeing that dot on you,,Good thing.. as long as that dot in not on you..

Just a few thoughts...
Live long and Prosper.
Dusty!

Re: Laser Grips Questions

Thanks, SAUM. Maybe CT has expanded the line, but I already looked on the CT site, found a grip they said fit the titanium, ordered it from Cheaper than Dirt, and it was not even close to fitting. The screw placement and other things made it impossible. So I called Cheaper than Dirt and they said they knew the CT grip did not fit the titanium model and let me send it back. But since they knew, it couldn't hurt to call and see if Cheaper thaqn Dirt now thinks they carry a CT grip for the Taurus titanium.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

Gal, the laser grip CT said did work for her titanium did not. However, I was just cruising Taurus and they have made many titanium models. The one that did not fit my wife's might fit yours. I think CT keeps expanding the line, too.

I think maybe I should have this done at a gunshop so the right grip gets ordered and on, if there is one for her titanium. Or swap her my S&W model 60 which I know I can get CT grips for. It is heavier, but not that heavy.

Dusty, thanks. Making her a better target is not a good thing. But I do the 'check the yard' stuff. I suspect anyone she needed to shoot would be able to see her anyway.

Thank you..Have a point.!

Also if possible to fine a gun club and become a member of a gun club, and have access to a firing range so she can use the firearm using iron sights , and become used to them and firing the weapon.
Not pushing ,,there are people, she would meet that would
bend over backward to help train her in the use of her toyl.

With great respect.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

My last post, was assuming ,the person in question was new..
If not ,my I hold to my last posts.

Laser sights are nice, finding and hitting the target ,is quick..
As long you can see it, (have to know where to point)
..but if you shoot enough ,the weapon will be part of you ..
Iron sight at night are not good, but ,,

Re: Laser Grips Questions

We don't go to the range enough. She enjoys it more than I do. I got spoiled as a kid living where I could shoot on our land, and ranges feel confining to me. I'd rather shoot at cans or a stump than a target and I just don't like the whole experience. A club is a good idea.

For the times she has shot, she has done great, but a lot more practice would help her.

We have not gotten CCW permits because I thought they might turn into 'where to pick up the guns' lists, but considering her work (she teaches in a juvenile detention facility), she might get the 'almost a cop' treatment, so maybe the first thing might be setting up her required permit training.

And then she will be street legal with that shoulder holster. It's legal here to have a gun in your house or car, and till now, that has felt good enough. But if things come apart, it won't be.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

I have a couple of them. My sister came out with her boss to shoot. The boss turned out to be goofy and I regretted putting a gun in her hand. Anyway with the lazer in the grip of a Beretta 92 she was accurate at plinking cans immediately having never held a pistol berfore. Sis liked it too, she was an MP in marines.

Re: Laser Grips Questions

AM,

The problem wasn't with the laser, it was with me. I guess I'm just more used to regular old sights.

I have a good friend, an older gentleman, who's a heck of a shot with whatever he picks up. He says the secret to shooting is to let your body do it, don't get your mind too involved. He can shoot a pistol without sights about as good as I can shoot one with.

He always says, "I can throw a rock and hit you without sights, why couldn't I do the same with a pistol?" I think the secret is practice. I have been known to hunt hogs after dark. With a couple of my favorite rifles, I don't need to be able to see the sights, I can thump one just by seeing them. When I look, I know where the rifle is pointing. That's a lot easier with a rifle, but I think it works both ways. I'm not quite there yet with a pistol, though.
